Abraham a Pattern of Promise 3 - A Great Nation and Blessing

January 26, 2020 Speaker: Steve Cowden Series: Abraham: A Picture of Discipleship

Topic: Sermons Passage: Genesis 12:1–3

In God's promise to Abraham, the foundational promise of the rest of the scriptures, he declares two things that he will do: 1) make of Abraham a great nation and 2) bless him and bless all the nations through him.
1. “I am going to make you a great nation” (Gen 1:28, 9:1, Ex 1:7, 19:4-6, 1 Pet 2:9-10, Rev 1:5-6, 7:9-17) fruitful, multiply, fill the earth; my own possession, kingdom of priests, holy nation
By His sovereign power, God is bringing to pass what he has planned and desired, that is, creating a people for his own posession from this one man.
2. “And I will bless you” 5x bless (Gen 24:34-35, 1:28, 5:1-2, 9:1, Num 6:23-27, Psalm 67:1-3, Luke 24:50-51, Eph 1:1-2, Rev 22:3)
Material blessing for Abraham was part of it but not the whole story, harkens back to creation, repeated through the Aaronic blessing and before Jesus ascended, in every epistle to New Covenant believers, finally in new heavens and earth.
