General Perspectives on Government - Old Testament

January 17, 2021 Speaker: Steve Cowden & Chris Greer Series: Christians and the State

Topic: Sermons

The Old and New Testaments recognize legitimate institutions of leadership under varied conditions and implementations which we shall refer to as “The State”. Any collective enterprise
requires cohesion, direction, and agreed upon rules for success. This implies the need for leadership. This is true of small undertakings as well as larger societal initiatives. We do not know what this would have looked like in a perfect world. But we do know what it should/does look like in an evil world.
Scripture, especially Proverbs, demonstrates that social organization under kings and rulers is a result of divine sovereignty operating in the earth (Act 17:26). It is designed to be a blessing from God for the human race in general.
As Christians we must acknowledge and appreciate these institutions as having their origin ultimately in God, not human ingenuity.
