General Perspectives on Government - New Testament 2 (Epistles)
February 14, 2021 Speaker: Steve Cowden & Chris Greer Series: Christians and the State
Topic: Sermons Scripture: Romans 13:1–7, Titus 3:1–2, 1 Peter 2:13–17
The New Testament has a very clear perspective on worldly, often wicked and always imperfect, governments - we ought to give them what is due (taxes, customs, honor, subjection) so that we do not offend them and because God establishes every governmental authority. We would do well to remember that these commands and perspectives were given in the context of Roman occupation, when enemies were ruling over and oppressing the Jews.
Here are the main ideas from these three passages in the epistles:
- Government is from God
- Be cooperative and peaceable
- Show honor and respect
