It’s clear that John is concerned about people professing to know and love Jesus, counterfeits within the Christian community, even including himself, using the term “we.” According to John, the evidences for what is claimed is always in the actions of a person, not simply their words.
Walk in light, love the truth, and love your brethren - these are the evidences that you are abiding in Christ, and John tells us that we can be assured of our salvation by our love in deed in truth.
