Do we as Christians give primary authority to the scriptures or the changing winds of science? The scriptures are clear that everything is created in six days, and the only reason to insert billions of years via a gap theory is because of the pressure of the majority view of atheistic science. Is scripture your highest authority or the common belief of the day?
